M1A problem???

I just purchased a used M1A and I took it out to the range hoping to have a little fun. On the first round the rifle locked up completely. The bolt would not cycle back and the charging handle jumped off of the roller. It was my fault to make sure that the weapon was properly greased ( thought it was). Anyway, when I pull the charging handle back to charge a round the handle keep jumping off of the track. My question is what do I need to do to keep this from happening?? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

    If you own a M1A the very first thing you need is The M14 Complete Assembly Guide from here, http://www.fulton-armory.com/ Sorry they dont have a direct link to it, look under books on the right hand side of the main page.

    Without having the gun in hand I can tell you one of 2 things could be wrong. First off being greased or not will NOT make this happen to your gun. I think you either have a OP rod that is not properly in the guide track and just needs to be assembled properly, part of basic maintenance. The other and more expensive option is that the tab that holds the OP rod to the receiver is out of spec and too small from wear or damage. This will require you to replace the OP rod.

    A dirty/corroded chamber will cause a fired case to "grab" & the result will be the problem you described. I would clean it with a chamber brush; you can get a plastic dental mirror to see inside the chamber. If that doesn't get it mirror smooth, try polishing it with auto polishing compound.

    With out reading any of the other posts, I think you may have a worn tab on your oprod. These rifles were not made to dry fire, when they tested them in the very cold inviroment they used no lub because of freezing of the lube and the proformance was good sould not be a problem on your rifle firing a few rounds.

    I suggest a close look at the op-rod square tab, the op-rod cavity (where the roller sits) and the track on the right side of the receiver for undue side-play. Do this with the trigger assembly and the recoil spring removed.

    www.fulton-armory.com has replacement op-rods. Although op-rods are available elsewhere, F/A won't let an excessively worn/out of spec op-rod leave the warehouse.

    Also, check the op-rod guide that's on the barrel about 6in in front of the receiver.

    Sidenote: Use/handload to 7.62 NATO pressures. Civillian .308 is about 5Kpsi higher than what the rifle was designed for. Prior owner may have sold the rifle due to early, excessive wear on the reciprocating parts as the result of improper ammo useage.
