double barrel shotgun opening lever alignment

I have been told if the opening lever on a double barrel shotgun is left of center when the barrels are closed, there is a problem. If the lever is to the left and the lock up is tight is there still a problem? What exactly is the concern? What is the fix?

    I guess I had it backwards! This is good news as I have bid on a shotgun and found out the lever was to the left after the bid. Thanks for the info!

    A quality sxs will start out life with the lever to the right-
    in firing position. As it as used-the lever will move to the left-
    in firing position. If the arm locks up tight-no concern.

    Gotta agree with 101 there. My Colt Double Hammer is to the right.

    101 Airborne and Colt Dr. are correct. As the gun wears, the lever moves to the left.
