Smith & Wesson Model 13-1

Got a chance to pick up one for $350, with 4" barrel.
It's super clean, I'd say LNIB.
Don't see any on the auction side, see 13's of diff dash numbers but not "-1".
Is it worth it or should one stay away?

Correction, it is a 4".

    The price seems OK, if factory original. But the 6" barrel, has me puzzled? Never seen or heard of a long barreled 13? My WAG is either it's been rebarreled, or some very limited special order production piece?

    Never seen a 13 with a 6" bbl. Only were made with 3&4" ones.

    Well, whatever it is if it's like new and a Smith and goes "bang" it's worth $350.00. My only concern would be if someone stuck a 38 Special barrel on a 357 Magnum frame, will the forcing cone be able to handle it. If the answer is no, I'd be happy with a $350.00 6" Model 13 that shoots 38 Specials only.

    The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, 3rd edition states "13-1 (1974) Introduced this year for N.Y.S.P. with model number stamping."

    What you are looking at is 'probably' a re-finished & re-barreled prior police department service gun. For a service gun to survive in LNIB condition would in itself be an extreme rarity & that still does not explain the barrel length. The book says the M13 was only made in 3" & 4" lengths. It probably has a M10 or a M14 barrel fitted.

    The gun sounds like a shooter in nice shape & as such should be worth the money. Be aware the investment thing is not there as it will not appreciate in value as an original would.

    Long story, short version, If it's what you want, go for it!

    Edit; Look at the bottom of the grip frame. If there is a star stamped either before or after the ser.#, that would indicate a factory re-finish. Under the grips on the side of the grip frame would then have the date of the rework stamped there. If the rework was done at the factory, that will up the value.

    I did a typo, sorry it is a 4" barrel and in excellent shape.
    Should know tommorrow if I get it.
