Bert, know your busy in cody, but......

Just curious. Have you ever read or looked at The standard catalog of Winchester firearms? just bought it today as it if filled with color photos of beautiful winnies[:D]. My question is how accurate is their pricing of collectible Winchester guns? Author is Joseph M Cornell.

    I will chime in. There are some guys in upper Idaho called Tapaderas Winchesters. They are in Cody now.

    They deal in nice unaltered old Winchesters, and they have good photos on their site with prices.

    In answer to your question, No, I have not looked at the standard catlog of Winchester firearms. As such, I can not attest to its accuracy, but I will state that in general, none of the price guide books are accurate concerning the values of the collector grade Winchester.

    Jim & Steve from Tapadera's are not in Cody yet... they should be on the road about mid-week next week though.

    I figured. It seems to be higher than blue book on most ive looked at, yet I wouldnt really call it a price guide even though thats what they claim on the cover, It is basically, just a really cool hardback book with over 350 color photos of them old girls. I figured the priceing had to be high. Thanks for your input though Bert.

    My take on that particular book was not to buy it. It is sadly dissapointing compared to the Standard Catalogue of Smith and Wesson. The information is very general and not at all the kind of detail one would expect. You would almost think R. L. Wilson had done it.

    Bert is probably your best guide on that. Madis has some problems, but much of his work is good. Renneberg on model 94, a new edition will be out about Christmas and you can get a nice pre-publication order price at Amazon. The older editions are asking 3 figure $. Arther Pirkels books also have their place, and I kind of like them for a quick overview of the lever actions. Then there are the Winnie shotguns and I know zip about those, again Bert is your man. Almost forgot Rule, the Rifleman's Rifle on the model 70. also asking hundreds for an OP book published in 1966 if memory serves.

    The Winchester reference books written by Herbert Houze and Ned Schwing are on the top of my list. John Madl's book on the Model 1886 is top-notch as well.

    Robert (Bob) Renneberg's book on the Model 94 (soon to include the Models 55 and 64, with the research courtesy of yours truly) will be the absolute definitive book written to date. My future reference book on the Winchester Model 1885 will also be "The Book" when I complete it.
