Ruger 96/44 Levergun Question

I am looking for some feedback on the Ruger 96/44. I have heard mixed things on this gun, some seem to think it cheaply made and inacurate, others seem to like it alot.

Things on it that look good to me include: light weight, detachable mag, RUGER made, decent woods cal.

Yes, I am getting tired of loading and unloading my Marlin 1894 day after day, and wearing the brass at the same time.

    The one I have is a great little gun.

    The down side, they tend to be picky about feeding the longer/heavy bullets.

    I only know of a 4 round clip avalible. Compared to the higher capacity of the tube mag.s, the other lever 44's seem to get the general nod.

    For a youngster, they are a good starter, except for the removable mag. Just a loose part to loose!

    I would bet good money both Ruger's 44 carbines would sell much better if they made a 10 or 15 round clip (I know, it's really a magazine).

    I have had very good experience with the Ruger 96. I use 300 grain Hornady XTP bullets, loaded fairly hot, and have had no problems with feeding. Accuracy is good (shoots in to a couple inches at 100 yards) and effectiveness on large Texas hogs has been good. I have a Marlin 1894 lever in 44 too but it is not getting much play since I got the Ruger. A ten round magazine would be handy but I carry an extra five round one and that works out ok. Have a 1 to 4.5 Nikon on it and that seems about right.

    I'm not too crazy about the heighth of the stock. It seems to be made for a scope & with the iron sights I have a bit of a problem getting my head down far enough for the iron sights. Okay for the target range but that could be a problem with a snap shot.
    It would probably be fine with a scope but I really can't see putting a scope on a .44 mag carbine.
    I should sell the thing now that I have a .454 carbine & pistol.

    Re: Kick. You really wouldn't want to try my Ruger #3 in 45/70 especially with the hot rounds it can take.

    No thank you. I don't shoot the 44 more than 15-20 times. I thought about a 444 or a 45-70 too much for me.

    Thanks for the input guys, just got to find one used in my neck of the woods now. The Ruger is not as pretty as my pet Marlin 1894 .45 Colt, but that makes it all the better for knocking around.
