410 single shot Stevens

I have my grandfather's old 410 J. Stevens single shot. I'm sure it's at least 75 years old because he had it when he lived on the farm before moving to town in 1940. I'm sure he didn't pay a lot for it when new, but it's still in good condition (though not "pristine"). I was just wondering if it has any value to list it seperately with my homeowner's insurance.

    It was a utility grade inexpensive shotgun when new and still is. Value depends on condition, amount of original finish left on the metal and wood and the mechanical condition. Since the gun is a .410 bore it will command slightly more the the other gauges 12,16 and 20. Value can run from about $200 for one in factory new condition to less than $10 for a rusty rotten incomplete piece of junk.

    Trying to narrow down the range of your estimate of $10-$200, the condition of the shotgun would be considered good. It was used on the farm to scare off chicken hawks and shoot rabbits for dinner. So, it has the usual scratches & nicks on the stock and a little rust on the barrel - though not much.

    From what you're implying on your post, it has more sentimental value than monetary. I have the feeling I don't need to have Lloyd's of London cover it. [:)]

    It's pretty hard to quote gun values w/o actually seeing the gun and condition. But in my experience, the average value of a well used but good shooting condition .410 of this type is in the $75. to $125. range.

    A nice Stevens .410 would bring $150 to $175 in my area.

    With a slight patina and worn but not damaged stocks they bring about $75-$125 in this area.

    I concur with dakota. These at one time were $25 to $50 but as of late in my area, gnerally bring what he has stated. Nice meaning,
    no rust, stock with scratches, nicks from use but not missing large chunks, cracked, loose, bore not pitted. Bluing worn in usual carry places, front bead in place, and above all, functional, usable and safe condition (as in I don't wince and duck when I pull the trigger)

    $100 to $200. No offense but not worth adding to insurance coverage. Most homeowners policys cover a small amount for firearms and that should cover it. Stevens .410's are neat little guns. Seeing the family history I would hang on to it forever.
