Summer Carry?
Help settle an argument! My buddy has and carries a High Standard .22 MAG derringer; a KEL-TEC P3AT and a S&W 5 shot .38 Model 60...all for summer use. He says it depends on what he's wearing as to what he carries. He carries a .45 in condition 1 in the winter. I say he should stay with the S&W and get away from the other two. What do you all think?

A 380 in the pocket is better than a 500S&W in the safe. 0 -
Not a fan of a .22 Derringer but that is me. It does not seem that much smaller then the P3AT.
I love my P3AT and as dcs said it stays in my pocket. It is light, small, comfortable, easy, never left at home.......0 -
I used to carry a small Walther type 22lr auto in my hip pocket but found it to be a single shot most of the time. Pocket lint and fuzz would build up in any crevice and cycling became a maybe thing. The 22lr operation is not positive enough to overcome the hangups. I think the High Standard is pretty well enclosed which might keep it working but 2 shots of 22 lr is not that great-better than a pocket knife but still not great. 0 -
I like both the .38 snub and P3AT. Either of those two is good enough, with good loads and a few extra mags or quickloaders.
the model 60 would probably be the more reliable and definately the more powerful of the two.
But a clean Keltec and a few extra mags is gonna print and weigh less then the revolver with speedloaders. And still be reliable enough
So its a trade off either way with them two..
I'd Leave the 22 at home, unless it is purely for back up to one of the the .38's.0 -
22 mag will have more penetration than 22lr, so at least its is the right rimfire to carry. And as others have said, the 22 with you is better than the 45 at home... 0 -
Stick with your model 60. It will go bang when you need it to, unless you have a dud round....then all you have to do is pull the trigger again. It would be even nicer if it were a newer model 60 that handled 357 magnums.

Oldcop...always best to carry with what you are good with...and practice a lot with. If you practice a lot with a .22 and are comfortable with it, carry it. Same with a .22mag, .38 and on and on. Nothing is worse that to carry something that weighs like a boat anchor and you don't shoot well. A well placed .22 is better than a scattershot big round. My personal CC is a Taurus Titanium .38 loaded with +P's as it fits my bill for ease of carry and accuracy. But sometimes I carry my little Walther P22 with laser as I find it also comfortable and accurate. But practice is the key. Good shooting! 0 -

There's no "argument", since this is a question of personal preference.
Whatever gun your friend prefers and is actually going to carry is the "best" choice, period.
Personally, given the above choice, I'd toss the High standard derringer altogether, as it provides no advantage over the Kel-Tec, but disadvantages of less power and capacity.
For me its either the Smith 60 (for more power and reliability) or the Kel-tec (for ease of carry/concealment, and a hair more capacity).
Given THAT choice, I'd probably be packing the Kel-tec as its lighter and more comfortable. While in general I like the Smith snubnose better, I think the all steel one is just a bit too heavy for comfortable all day pocket carry. But that would depend on exactly where I was going and what I was doing that day, including how I was dressed.
EDIT: One other observation, right now .380 ACP ammo is nearly entirely unavailable. .22 magnum might be easier to find. So given the choice between an EMPTY .380 or a LOADED .22, I think the loaded gun wins out.0
