Carbon 15

I'm thinking on purchasing a Bushmaster Carbon 15. Does anyone know the durability of this type of rifle? I don't plan on shooting it alot maybe 1000 rds per year at the most. Also, how good is the accuracy?

    OK. I finally got my Carbon 15. I took it home, cleaned it, oiled it (not too much), and took it to the range. I had several magazines for it some 10 rd, some 20rd., some 30rd., all different manufacturers and makes. Same with the ammo, everything from PMC to Remington. What did I find out? The Carbon 15 jams on just about every 3rd to 4th rd no matter what kind of ammo or magazine. So, I broke it down and cleaned it again but still no luck. It is failing to expel the spent brass and as a result cannot load the live round. I guess in any other semi-automatic pistol this would be referred to as stovepiping? Well, at any rate, I've checked some other websites and I think my problem might be in the hammer. I might try to round it off a bit. Best bet would probably be to send it back to the dealer though unless anyone else has any suggestions.

    Only if it is a rifle and the barrel is under 16 inches or the over all length is below 26 inches. Either would classify it as a Short Barreled Rifle and subject it to registration and a $200 NFA Tax.

    Let me help you (or at least keep trying). A pistol does not have a butt stock (which is why it is a pistol) while a rifle, short barrel or otherwise has a butt stock, which is why it is a rifle.

    Here are two short barreled AR-15 rifles from my own collection:

    Both have butt stocks and both have barrels under 16 inches in length so they are short barreled rifles and needed to be registered as National Firearms Act weapons.

    Ok, thanks and I'm guessing there would be no way to attach a butt stock to the pistol. Thats all I needed to know, why it was a pistol and not a SBR.

    Another difference of a pistol and a rifle, is that the reciever was listed and registered by the manufacturer to the BATFE as being either a PISTOL, or a RIFLE.

    If the reciever is registered as a pistol, then it has no butt stock on it...and if you put one on it, then it is an SBR and MUST be NFA registered.

    If the reciever was manufactured as a rifle, then it can not have a barrel less than 16 inches, or be under 26 inches in overall length...wether it has a butt stock or not. If it does, then it must be NFA registered as stated above by Mark.

    No you would not need a tax stamp for the pistol, but yes, you can attatch a butt stock to that set up...but do not do it, unless you get a tax stamp.

    Clean it like a mad man within hours after each fireing... Carbon builds up in short barreled uppers like you wouldnt believe. And if you leave it uncleaned for week after fireing a mag or two, it gets insanely hard to clean out.


    and the fact that it is made of plastic means soul cleaning with a wire brush is probably a no no.

    A buddy of mine, back before Calif banned them, bought one of the early Carbon 15 pistols. I shot it on several occasions when he first got it; until we all decided that it was almost useless at anything over 25 feet. Yeah it is way cool to look at but unless you have muscles like Arnold S. holding it up and out is not going to get good groups. Shooting it from the hip was worse. So I hope you are talking about buying the Carbon 15 rifle not the pistol as it is much more usable. Also I hope you already own a milspec AR15 as that is much more the flexable platform. You can buy all kinds of after market stuff for the standard AR15 and very littly for the Carbon 15.
