Remington 700 varmint in 25-06 questions

A local shop has a very nice (95%) Remington BDL Varmint rifle in
25-06 caliber for sale. It has a bull barrel without sights and pressed checkering. The scope is a Burris Fullfield II 3-9. The asking price is $650. How desirable is this particular model and is it worth the money? I have wanted a 25-06 for a while and this might be the one. Thanks for any replies.

    You are the only one that can answer this question. Other than that, it is a well made, reliable rifle. If you mean is it highly sought after and therefore hard to find, I don't think so but I don't think of Remingtons this way, either.

    It's O.K. The store isn't doing you any favors. The scope is an economy model and as such doesn't have much resale value although any scope gets a push from a store no matter what brand or value. Based on current prices for Remington M700 rifles, you could be in good shape but if you get the chance, I would have a good close look at the throat and bore before buying it. This is a high energy cartridge due to the case capacity and caliber. The throats can suffer if a shooter isn't careful with his rate of fire.

    Lastly, I would check the twist rate. Currently, the standard twist rate for .25 caliber rifles runs 1:10" but you might be looking at a 1:12" and I would not value it as much as a 1:10" for the flexibility of bullet selection.

    Other than that, the .25-06 is a terrific cartridge performance-wise. I don't consider it to be a 'varmint' cartridge as I stated above. I use one when prairie dog shooting but reserve it for the longer, less frequent shots while using smaller cartridges for the majority of shots. It's a great hunting cartridge.

    if you collect early rem.700 varmint rifles the 25-06 was the only one on a long action and to me is the hardest one to find. with the scope i think it is a very good buy. eastbank.

    I had a shooting friend in the late 70s with one of these. He handloaded for it, and we shot many rockchucks at the time.

    This rifle is somewhat uncommon. I doubt if that many were made in 25-06. It should be quite accurate, especially if properly tweaked, and with the right handloads.

    I would say that the price is a bit high, although not terribly unreasonable, if the rifle is in quite good condition.

    Assuming good condition, good rifle and good scope. In my area, its an OK but not exceptional price. You don't give the intended use for the rifle... but its probably a little heavy to carry on a long walk to a hunting location, and the 3-9 scope is not enough for most varmints. 25-06 is always been a favorite - great cartridge for a variety of purposes.
