Need help Ithaca Model 37

Just bought older Ithaca model 37, how do you load it, first shell in chamber or magazine?

    I have many 37's and I personally load the first one in the magazine and then chamber it, then the remaining 4 or 2 if it is plugged. To much hassle trying to load it in the tube.

    ithaca4me, thanks thats what I thought, I recently bought a model 37R deluxe 12ga, cutts w 2 chokes, Full, IC. Serial number is 400,000 series. really pretty wood.

    Once you get used to the Model 37, either way of loading the first shell is really easy to do. I really like the bottom ejector design. The cutts compensator, while probably very functional, is not my favorite thing. I have a Browning Twelvette that I really like except for the poly choke look. My buddies call me "Elmer Fudd" when I pull it out.

    I have owned an Ithaca 37, DS Police Special for over 35 years. Great shotgun! FYI the 37 was one of only 2 pump guns that would fire everytime you cycled it WITHOUT releasing the trigger. Mine does this, but I can't speak to the newer 37's.

    partisan: It's sometimes called "slam-fire" and the Winchester 97 will do it, too. If you hold the trigger back, it will fire as soon as it locks. Maybe not a great idea to do it on a regular basis. I believe my newest 37 is a 1956 but I had one of the newer 37's and if you held back the trigger and worked the action, the hammer (internal) would just follow the breach block forward, not fire and leave the gun un-cocked. According to the book, it was designed that way and a poor job of it, in my opinion. If they didn't want it to slam-fire, they should have put in a trigger interupter like the Remingons have where you can release the trigger and pull it again and it fires. Can you imagine a tight situation where you fired a shot, held back the trigger while you shucked the action and then found that your gun went dead!?

    Congrats to you! I learned to scattergun shoot with an old 20 ga.model 37 back in the 60's. Still have it and have acquired a couple more in 16 and 12 ga. Great pump guns that will shoot forever with some TLC.
