S&W Model 17

I have a S&W Model 17-6 made about 1990. When I bought it back then, it came with the full lug barrel which was the "new" version back then. I have a chance to buy a non full lug barrel which looks better to me. Can the barrel be changed to the previous non-full leg version?

    What dash number would a 4" 17 have? What would it be worth? No box,papers.About 90%. Talked to owner today--it`s a -6, full underlug, 4". Would it be worth $500?

    As a point of reference, my 17, #4799, was made it 1948 and I wouldn't sell it at any price. That said, and others will doubtless tell you the same, the best ways to get an idea of what it's worth are to, first supply us with some good closeup pictures and as complete a description as you can, and, secondly, to search the auction side and see what 17's in like condition and age are going for.

    Welcome to the forums. If it's a model 17 it's not that old, befor 1957 it was refered to as a K 22 Masterpiece, I have one that was built in 1952. In 1957 S&W changed to the number system, look at the gun again, does it have a - after the number 17(17-3) or what ever? The - number indicates the change, or update for that model. The model 17 is built on the K frame, there are several variations and calibers built on the K frame. The K 38 Masterpiece (model 14) weighs the same as the K-22 Masterpiece when loaded, providing they have the some lenth barrel. The old S&W promotion stated that you could practice with the lower priced 22 ammo, then shoot the K-38 better because they weighed the same and had the same sight picture. IMHO they are the finest double action 22 revolver ever built.

    I agree, I have one with 8 3/8 barrel, TH TT, and Grips.

    I'd rate it close to a Diamondback.
