Firearms = Factory Seconds
Is anyone aware of Remington or other major manufacturer allowing factory seconds, if such a thing exists, to be sold to the public?

That's an urban legend.
Some manufacturers DO make cheaper versions of popular guns for sale to Big Box Stores. These might have matt finish metal rather than polished, or birch stocks instead of walnut, but functionally these are "first quality".
Most of the parts in a modern gun cost very little, at least to the factory. The barrel & stock of a rifle or shotgun are probably the most expensive, but it's still cheaper for the factory to throw away defective ones, rather than pay the relatively high cost if the gun is returned for repair.

Wrong. It is not urban legend. Seconds are quite often sold by manufacturers, usually high-line manufacturers as their standards of what should be considered a prime example are highest so they have more seconds. These are mechanically sound but usually have some cosmetic/fitting issues.
They will be marked as a second, in a discrete spot, so if you know where to look you will see the mark.0 -
I know Weatherby used to sell 2nd's. They were always marked on the stock under the barreled action. I think that the manufactures just make 'lower' quality firearms for the big box chains, reasons why you will only find certain models there. 0 -
Weatherby offered a large number of factory seconds several years back, most of them sold through CDNN. These rifles were discreetly marked as such under the wood line where it was not visible. Most of the Weatherbys seemed to be in the Vanguard series, but there were others models as well.

Ruger also sells seconds but not direct. Each has a mark which identifies it as a second, usually a cosmetic defect or a display gun from a show and sometimes factory quality test guns 0 -
What several manufacturers do is to stock pile guns that have been returned. When they have enough for a shipment they repair these and sell them to the discount stores. They are NOT seconds! Ruger used to mark theirs with a star. I called Remington about a year ago for a customer, when told the ser# the CS rep said, "Oh, that's a Wal-Mart gun, We've been having problems with them, just send it in." I did and they sent a new, replacement gun.

You're wrong. Seconds do exist and are sold. What you state about warranty returns being sold as used guns by manufacturers is true as well but seconds do exist.0 -

You're wrong. Seconds do exist and are sold. What you state about warranty returns being sold as used guns by manufacturers is true as well but seconds do exist.
Should have stated this better (still on my first cup of coffee). There are seconds sold. I was refering to the situation mentioned. I have seen some marked as seconds. Sorry for the mix up.
