What is S&W First Model in 38-40 worth? It is in very nice shape, nickel plated.

    First Model was produced for only seven years, and in good shape seems to be hard to find anymore.

    As I said in the suicide thread, a S&W in .38-40 is very scarce and worth a good deal of money if "very nice shape."

    But are you SURE it is a .38-40?
    The .38-44 Heavy Duty is a nice gun, a better shooter than the old No 3 or First DA, but is much more common and not worth nearly as much.

    It is going to take pictures or a DETAILED description, or both.

    Is this a double action and does it have S&W patent dates on the barrel?
    If so only 276 were made and in any condition it's valuable.
    If it is a Belgian copy, forget the above statements.

    Hello Be aware there were TWO entirely different S&W 33/44 one was a CARTRIDGE target round of very low Black powder pressures made to be shot in the Top Break type single actions . The other was a PISTOL 38/44 HEAVY DUTY this was a pistol on the N frame size pistol and was the forerunner of the 357 Magnum . ONE SHOULD NEVER fire HOT +P+ type 38/44 heavy duty loads listed for the 38/44 or you will end up with more pieces of your top break pistol then you started with[:(!][V][xx(][:(] I have a #3 single action target in 38/44 this pistol was designed YEARS before even the 38 special was even thought of I don't know how to post pictures on this FORUM but if you want pictures of cartridge and pistol send an EMAIL to my profile. Colt even chambered their First Gen SINGLE ACTION in 38/44 but I have never seen one .
