CMP ships direct!?
A friend got his CMP Garand today. They Fed-Xed it direct to his house. No FFL; no 4473 just sign for it. I thought we had that right taken away from us. Anybody know about the rules that permit that?

oh, you fill out plenty of paperwork to get that Garand. And I'm sure they run the NICS on buyers.

Even in Kalifornia. Even a couple of dealers I asked either didn't know that or they wanted the outrageous fee they quoted to recieve the rifles. I have recieved two M1 Garands & a M1 carbine direct from the CMP. 0 -
Actually you are not doing anything that filling out BATFE Form 4473 Part II (non over the counter transaction) allows. After meeting the CMP rules for club membership and participation in marksmanship you are going to fill out forms which have the same basic information as the 4473, have them notarized and then send them to the CMP, which will run you through the NICS. Once that is done the CMP is allowed to ship a rifle directly to you. By the way, you have no right to have a firearm shipped to you via interestate commmerce so that is a dead end if you feel like making a last stand on the issue rather than getting a C&R or dealer FFL. 0 -

Under ordinary circumstances, such direct shipment would not be permitted by the Gun Control Act of 1968. However, when CMP was organized, specific legislation was approved by Congress to permit CMP to do this.

EDIT: Regarding shipping of firearms & ammunition, you can only ship UPS/FEDEX from a company customer service counter (hub), NEVER from a UPS Store, Kinko's, or any other contractor.0 -

Was it UPS (United Pacifist Society)? One of their offices refused to ship for me yesterday ("we don't ship guns" the little gender neutral rugrat says to me! Those dirty rotten scoundrels have done the same thing at my place. They left arms right on the ol' front porch without even having me make my mark. Guess there's no reading test to hire on...I called right on up the chain of command and they could care less! You'd of thunk I was yakin' with the Brady Bill HQ or HGCI. Sheesh, what are we gonna do with these Jack Arses? Is Fed EX any better pards?

Order from the CMP and your items are shipped via FedEx, which has an exclusive contract with the CMP. You get no choice in the shipper with the CMP, it is FedEx or nothing. 0 -

The same people that left another box with the same "Adult Signature Required" tag on it.
That box contained 2 - 8pound kegs of BLC-2 smokeless powder on my front porch ... it was never recovered, fortunately the shippers insurance kicked in and replaced it.
