Texas Ranger Pistols

I have three Texas Ranger pistols. One is a Colt 1911, National Match, one is a Springfield heavily engraved 1911, and the last is a 38 Super Colt. I have the letters from the original owners.     I have three Texas Ranger pistols that I wish to sell. One is a heavily engraved Springfield 1911, one a Colt 1911, and a 38 Super Colt. Does anyone know what the collector value is? I have letters of authenticity from the original owner, as far back as 1981. I can e-mail pictures.

    We really need to see pictures of these, and a little more info wouldn't hurt...like did they belong to anyone of significant importance.

    EDIT: Well, since we have only 1 opinion so far, let me offer mine. While guns owned by Frank Hamer & contemporaries may be highly collectible, I doubt that many folks would pay a premium for these recent era guns. That's especially true for the Springfield with its poor quality engraving & refinishing; still, I would expect it to sell in the $400-500 range. As for the Colts, I think the grips actually lower the value, as the factory original grips are more desirable. It's difficult to estimate their condition as the photos are not very clear. But, I would guess that the .38 super would bring > $1,000, & the NM somewhat less than that. You might want to check the COMPLETED listings on the Gunbroker site to see what the same guns in similar condition have been selling for. Like Rufe-Snow says, if you can document them as having been owned by someone famous, that would help; however, I don't know of a single famous Texas Ranger within the last 50 years.

    Only way they are going to have any significant value, is if you can document their history of ownership to a known/famous member of the Texas Rangers.

    The engraved Springfield isn't all that old. Springfield sold the .45's with the "NM" serial number prefix, in the mid to late 80's time frame. I use to own one.

    Your pistols are fine examples of a highly focussed specialty. If you find the right specialist collector they could command serious money. You are likely to find few Texas Rangers collectors and even fewer persons competent to offer a meaningful evaluation. You say you have letters from the original owners, presumable ex-Rangers. If so, that provenance could be valuable - and important that it be documented, notarized for example, if a former owner is connected to some notable event in his career.

    Since contact with the right person or people may be difficult to establish, in your situation I would consider contacting a reputable dealer in Texas about the possibility of offering them for sale on commission through his business. Even though you may not actually intend to dispose of them, such a contact might yield useful information.
