stock finish???

What kind of finish is used for a gunstock which is not a varnish film type high gloss finish. It must be some sort of an oil that penetrates into the wood.

I have a new gun which I'd like to add some more sheen too. Not like a high gloss sheen, but just a little more ritz.

any suggestions?

    I discovered this Classic Oil Finish quite awhile ago, have realized some excellent results with it.

    I've had consistent good results with many, very thin layers, of hand rubbed TruOil, cut back down to surface of wood after each application with OOOO steel wool. Key is prep of wood before coat one; bringing surface down to silky smooth that stays that way after wetting with water and letting dry.

    Maybe some Birchwood Casey Stock Wax. Same company that make Tru-Oil. Just adds a little more shine to existing finish while providing added protection for original finish. Like waxing your car.

    This would be my suggestion, just be prepared to devote some time to the project and don't take shortcuts.

    I have also had good luck with Tru Oil.

    Even the Formby's satin tung oil varnish works well. I used it a couple of times on some guns

    I have been using Arrow stock finish for many years. It is an oil finish that is used with wet/dry sandpaper. It fill the wood pores as you apply it. After the pores are filled, you just apply the finish. It dries quicker than Tru-Oil or linseed oil.

    you said a new gun which really means what type of finish is on it now. if a ureathane oil wont work but stock wax as mentioned might be the way to go

    if you just want a oil type finish and not totally against urethane. best stuff is minwax helmsman spar urethane. get the clear satin. its in a spray can, quick and easy to apply. you can spray that and knock it down with oooo steel wool to a low a luster as you want. looks just like a oil finish, but much stronger and harder and much more weather resistant. when you use true oil you can almost look at the wood and put a dent in it. i think it penetrates and seals wood even better. if not the gun your refering to, use it sometime on another, i think youll like it.

    An oil finish is "in" the wood, a eurathane finish is on the wood. I like Watco danish Oil for gun stocks. Truoil is too thick and dries to fast for me, this will not allow for deep penetration. watco is as thin as water and penetrates deep deep into the wood.

    Prettiest gun I have, IMHO, has the Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil finish - not glossy, kinda matte, but really lets the grain show off.
