5.45x39 help needed

Bought a S & W 5.45x39 AR upper. The bolt will not close all the way with a bullet in the chamber but will close when empty. I have the Russian surplus ammo. It was suggested that the Russian ammo is slightly larger and that my upper may be a match grade barrel and that I may need to get it bored and polished to rectify my problem. Anybody else dealt with this? Thanks

    Whomever suggested the ammo is "larger" is wrong... don't ask them any more firearms related questions.

    Is the barrel marked 5.45x39?

    Send it back to S&W... not the first chamber problem on these.

    I have one of the S&W uppers in 5.45x39 and have problems with the current commercial hollow point ammo. The bullets jam in the throat when chambered and usually won't extract a live round. No problems with some RWS ammo or the Wolf 70 grain(this is very inaccurate by the way). What specific type of ammo is causing the problem? I have two different lots of surplus ammo and found no difficulty with chambering.

    Probably wont stabilize a 70 grain bullet from a 16" barrel, Velocity is way to low, I'd imagine.

    Hmm. I say this because I have a 1-9" 16" AR in .223 that will not stabilize factory 70 grain + rounds.

    I asked a friend about this and he said they where distabilizing because the barrel was to short makeing velocity to low. Basically He said you need to load them hotter then most manufacturers spec, or use lighter bullets.


    Wolf Ammo is usually pretty sedate anyway.

    They seem to stabilize well in the 16in barrel of the AK74. Atleast it does in my Romanian AK.

    Thanks..it is stamped correctly....It is Russian surplus that comes in the cans.....send it back huh?

    yup... call them and ask for a UPS tag... it should be right and they are fantastic when they are.

    I don't think your problem is the ammo. I know of several who have had lots of problems with the S&W rifle. One of them sent it back to them 3 times and still had the same problem. I am not trying to heart anyones feelings, but if you want something to shoot 5.45X39 in, buy yourself a 74' knock-off like the Polish rifle or one of the Romanian SAR's. I used to shoot mine in the local tactical matches and have fired it over 90 times in a very short period of time and in very HOT weather; it never missed a lick.............
