i have a rifle barrel marked marlin fire arms co pat aug.1 1893 want some info on it..it is marked 25-20.is this the cal or is this the top barrel for a 25 cal-20ga rifle/shotgun combo....thanks

    Is it worn out? Does she plan to shoot way heavy bullets?

    The best rifle barrel I have is a Krieger, although not on a Remington.

    We need a little more information...what is the chambering now, and what would you like to have it chambered in? What are your intentsions or purpose for this rifle?

    I would suggest a Lother-Walther, Shilen, or a Hart Barrel then.

    It is a 308 heavy barrel. What she wants is a bull barrel in 308 30 inches to shoot 300 yards,

    "What she wants is a bull barrel in 308 30 inches to shoot 300 yards,"......what you have now will do this just as well as a 30" with a faster twist. the 1/12" will handle 168 gn bullets (or better yet the 155 gn 'palma' bullet).

    I have to make one observation first.

    If my wife asked me for a new barrel so she could shoot at any range, I'd beat feet to the nearest gunsmith so fast my feet would look like a blur!

    Now, in all seriousness, I have shot a 20" - .308 Win. bolt rifle to 1,000 yards with success. There are some minor problems if the velocity isn't at the very top but it will certainly make it 300 hands down, no sweat. Her rifle, barrel and twist rate will work just as good for 300 yards as it will for out to 1,000 yards (with Match bullets). This is based on using intermediate length or weight bullets in hunting configuration of course.

    Is there any other reason(s) that you know of or that she will tell you about this request? If she just wants the look of the longer, heavier barrel then by all means, indulge her. It will change the balance, handling and weight of the rifle obviously. I have a couple of these set ups that I use for longer range hunting in the desert so I will guarantee you one thing, you better be in good shape to haul this thing around for any length of time! With a good scope, rings and base, mine tops out at roughly 13 lbs.

    If her intentions are to shoot paper from a bipod/bench or hunt from a blind or tree stand, no problem.

    I shoot 300yds all the time with my 20in. Remington PSS-LTR. With match bullets, it does about 2in. if I do my part. I load 168&175's.
    The 168's shoot a little tighter. I want to try some 155gr. Palmas in it.

    "Bull" and "heavy" are kind of interchangable terms. Are you looking for a heavier barrel than you currently have. What other have said is all correct. Go to a barrel makers web page like Kreiger and they will break down the barrel countours. Tell us what you currently have and what you are interested in going to . You may or may not want to change. In any case 300 yards is relatively short distance and anything from 20" on up will work. The only reason to go to a faster twist rate would be to fire the heavier bullets which you don't have to have at that distance. But us gun people don't always base our wants on need. 28" and longer is very long and also very heavy to hold unless you are always using a bipod or something similar. If you do decide to change go with a good barrel maker ie, Kreiger, Hart, Douglas ect. and go with a match barrel. Contact me direct if you want to discuss this in detail, good luck.
