Good or bad time to buy a shotgun?

I live in California, I am beginning to think I may want to buy a shotgun and my question is; do you think with the recent 2nd amendment decision and Obama (and most of his staff) being anti-gun, is this a good or bad time to buy a shotgun?

I've seen gun melting events in the newspapers in the past and wouldn't want to spend $400 on a shotgun only to have it confiscated due to some new law.

Any thought?

    It is without question a good time to leave the Peoples Republic of California. That said, buy the shotgun, they will have much better things to do than worry about guns for a while. Join the GOA and/or NRA too.

    Unless your so tied up with a job and/or family obligations, it's definitely the right time to be leaving Cali.

    With the meltdown of the economy, disassembling of the various social welfare problems, letting the prisoners out of jail because they can't afford to keep them locked up, etc.etc. Calif is going to be a Zoo, get out while you can. Buy the shotgun first though, very likely your really going to need it if things turn ugly.

    The answer is that if you want a shotgun, are legally permitted to own one, and you've got the money, its a good time to buy one.

    If not, it isn't.

    Obama has nothing to do with this.

    Its becoming increasingly LESS likely that he'll be able to enact another major gun control bill, at least in his first term. The Republicans will stand together against any gun control bill, and there are enough Democrats afraid of the political consequences of voting for gun control in the post 9-11/post Katrina era that gun control simply won't have the votes to get passed.

    The idea was already raised, and basically the Democrats shut it down.

    Even if another major Federal gun control bill were proposed, its highly unlikely that it would ban pump-action shotguns, and even more unlikely that the ban would be retroactive. (IE nobody would be banging down your door to come take yours away).

    So I wouldn't worry about these becoming unavailable based on a FEDERAL ban. That's really not in the cards right now.

    I also kind of doubt that the State of CA would ban shotguns, though its a lot harder to say that with conviction.

    If you are that worried about spending $400 and possibley losing it, keep the money and use it to help change the laws back to what they sould be.

    There's currently a bill going thru the CA legislature that would restrict the purchase of handgun ammunition, such that starting July 2010, you must buy it in person (no mail or internet purchases to CA), provide all your personal identification info and a fingerprint for the record of sale, and are limited on transferring handgun ammo to others, etc., all in the name of fighting the spread of "community terrorism".

    This article talks about being limited to purchasing 50 rounds per month, but the only reference I saw in the proposed law had to do with vendors being required to register with the state if they sell more than 50 rounds of handgun ammunition (which includes .22 ammo) per month: http://www.sbsun.com/sports/ci_12526272

    If it passes, handgun ammo is going to be in short supply (it is already for other reasons nationally), very expensive, and a pita to go thru the purchasing process. Already my local Big-5 is out of handgun ammo, but there's lots of shotgun ammo still!

    I agree that the best time to buy a shotgun is when you want one. You have to decide what you want to do. Running around the house might nice to have a coach 12 gauge. A Mosberg pump is not too expensive either. Cash is Trash. Guns hold there value much better that stocks.

    Buy a 12 gauge shotgun, put a good tactical light on it.

    Buy lots of ammo, Managed recoil Slugs and buck shot. as well as bird shot.


    As has been suggested, If you can, get out of that state. Put atleast 2 states distance between you and california, as well as two states above the border.

    Buying a shotgun is not a political decision. It's financial. Buy as many as you can afford and buy the best your budget will allow.
