Winchester 1897
Hello, I am new to the forum and hope someone can help. I just picked up another model 97 take down and the top of the reciever on this one is matted. Haven't seen this. The slide is marked model 97 the serial # dates it 1940. From what i have read matted recievers where on trap models but the bolt is not marked trap thank's Gary

I have a winchester 97 serial#413201 with a two barrel set 32 inch full and a 26 inch improved cylinder...what would the value be? 0 -

Welcome to the boards here on Gunbroker.
If they are both in good condition, and your actions are tight, then they would both be able to handle your standard loadings. I would not by any means use any magnum loads.

Be sure to have your gunsmith check the chamber length. Early 16 guages (before about 1930) will have a 2-9/16" chamber and may be unsafe if today's 2-3/4" shells are used. You can find 2-1/2" shells if you do some searching on the web. 0 -
Thanks to all for the good info , I will talk with my local gunsmith next week and have him look them over , I don't plan on shooting them much , just want to get them cleaned lubed and shoot a couple of times , I would however like to use the 16 gauge for a little pheasant hunting , but I only ever go one time a year so shooting would be kept to a minimum , and as far as magnums , the only time I venture into those is for waterfowl hunting ,and then my shoulder hates me for a week. ! The currently published information concerning the dates of manufacture of the Winchester Model 1897 shotgun is not accurate. If you would like to know what the actual DOM is, you can post the serial number, or send it to me in a PM.
The Winchester Model 1897 was specifically designed as a smokeless powder gun. It will safely handle any modern manufactured 2-3/4" 12 gauge shell or if it is a 16-gauge gun, a 2-9/16" shell. Do NOT shoot Magnum shells of any length, or any shell loaded with steel-shot.0 -

I don't plan on shooting it with anything over 1oz load ,for at least one simple reason, that I don't want to add any extra uneeded wear and tear.It is a 12ga. and the serial number is 259560,I just checked the bore on the 16 ga. Newport and it has 2-3/4 chambers. same thing with I will shoot light loads in it . Thanks Bert for all your help.0 -

Serial 259560 was manufactured in the latter part of the year 1904. It appears that whatever reference source you used is very close.0 -
