Model 1917 Colt 45 revolver

I notice that serial number stamped on the butt of the pistol next to the "US Army Model 1917" does not match the serial numbers else where on the gun. Can I assume that the Army required their own special serial numbers?

  You got it. The number on the butt of a 1917 is not the serial number.
