providing drivers license

I sold a gun to someone in another state.(First one I've sold online). His FFL holder is asking for a copy of my drivers license. Is this common? Is it necessary for me to provide this? I searched around the site here, and could not find any info relating to this. Thanks

    The dealer has to provide to BATFE records of any firearm he has as to who he received the item from . This is SOP. no problem for you to do so.. In the future if you want to sell you should put that you are not a dealer some dealers will not transfer from out off state unless you send information like this .

    Some dealers will specifically request a copy of your DL when doing the transfer. I don't know for a fact that it's legally required though? Back when I was still doing the auctions only two or three actually asked me for a copy. I didn't see any harm in sending it, and haven't had any bad repercussions from doing it, in the years since.

    He wants some proof (that the Fed's will accept) as to WHO he got the gun from. No big deal and fairly common, simply zerox the front and back and Fax/mail the copy to him.
    His shop, his rules. Some FFL's won't accept a firearm for transfer unless it comes from another FFL.
    BTW, he can REFUSE to complete the transfer, and return the firearm back to you, unless you comply with his shop rules (your buyer will be mad at you, not the FFL)

    A lot of ammo dealers also require it. Not a big deal. Theoretically it could be the basis for identity theft, but in point of fact most identity theft is done by relatives.

    As noted he has to log the name and address of the seller in his bound book. No big deal.

    If you dig into the ATF regs on acquistions and dispositions of firearms, there is this:
    "(1) Cause the transferee, if other
    than a licensee, to be identified in any
    manner customarily used in commercial
    transactions (e.g., a driver's license),
    and note on the record the method
    used"

    The FFL holder has to show WHO he got a gun FROM, as well as who he sends a gun TO. Normal business practice.
