A friend has one for sell for 350.00 about 90-95% with wood grips he said but I cant find one on the auction side. Are they rare or something since none are listed and what would one be valued at as per my description Its gotta be worth that Right?

    not rare at all most of them are taken off an houge overmolds are put on. My dad had one at one point we still have the wood grips that he replaced for some reason. 350 is a pretty good price since most run in the 500 dollar range last time I checked.

    I would buy it at that price or if you don't want it, tell him to sell it to me. I want another one.

    A 686 with original wood grips is a terribly accurate handgun fired in double action mode. There is no need for rubber grips on a 686.

    I strongly prefer the combat-style Hogue fingergroove grips over the original square butt style wood grips. In fact, I'll take pretty much ANY similar aftermarket grips over the stock square grips (eg Pachmayer, Rogers, Uncle-Mikes', etc).

    Its not a question of recoil at all, nor of appearance, but just pure comfort.

    The Hogue grips fit my hand a lot better than the stock square butt grips. The smaller overall size, palm swell and relieved little finger groove make it a far more comfortable and reproducable grip. So given the choice, I'll always choose that.

    I'll admit that the stock smith Goncalo alves grips LOOK nice, but its not the 1950s anymore. The traditional square butt grip shape is simply not the best around anymore.

    Smith and Wesson must agree, since it also now puts the Hogue grips as the stock grips on the new 686s. I don't know when they made the switchover, but there are plenty of old square butt grips around if you want to put them on a newer gun (or vice versa).

    And as to the original question, no, 686-1 guns aren't particularly rare. The 686 is one of the most popular (if not THE most popular) .357 magnum revolver in production. That said, $350 for a nice shape 686 with wood grips is a steal. Buy it.

    I'll doubt you'll want to sell it after shooting it a bit. 686's are one of the best DA revolvers ever made IMHO

    p.s. any K frame grip will fir the L frame grip
