value of Winchester commemorative rifle

have been uable to find value of michigan law enforcement commemorative winchester model 94 rifle. it was made about 1980 and i believe it is gold plated (looks to be). Thanks

    This is not a Winchester commemorative. It is a SPECIAL edition. Very little demand for Special editions. Check with whomever did the finish work.

    Special editions, as well as most Winchester commemoratives,have little collector value for a lot of good reasons: (1) There are just way too many. They were just a marketing gimick and Winchester commemorated everything under the sun. The quality of some isn't up to that of standard production. (2) In just about any area of collecting, anything manufactured with the intent of being a valuable collectible, isn't. (3) The gussied up appearance of many is a detraction. Fake gold plating and cheap looking case hardening are not great turnons. (4) Finally, for any commemorative or special edition to have any collector interest at all, the gun with it's original packaging, and all the original paper work, must be in pristine condition.

    I have been to a couple live auctions that had lots of those Winchester rifles. It seemed no one wanted them, they went for rather low bids.

    Most of the time, the commeratives like those are made by an outside company. They contract the maker for a special serial number run, then they doctor up the firearm, weather a pistol, rifle, shotgun or muzzleloader. The houses I am talking about are the Franklin mint, America Remembers, and some other's. They try to prey on other peoples reputation...Like throwing a coat of paint on an old house, and saying look at this beautiful old well kept home, made by some famous architect. That is what the commerative houses do...use the names like Winchester, and Colt in their sales slogans, and then throw in some famous people names like Chief Crazy Horse, General Custer, Sitting Bull, and such.

    They rarely bring more than their factory counterparts, if they are fortunate enough to fetch that.

    Company catalog showing prices of standard rifles will usually approximate the value of the "gussied up" rifles. Big bux come from collectors. The rifle you have is out of the "collecting loop". The buyers available to you will be the "everyday" buyer, with no willingness to pay high prices.
