What is the difference between a Yugo M47 and a yugo M48 8mm Mauser?

According to my reference the M 47's were rebuilt/reworked rifles, that were originally manufactured prior to W W II. The M 48's were new rifles made in the Yugo arsenal starting in 1948. 0 -

Both of these are large-ring 8mm Mauser rifles, somewhat comparable to the German K-98 but not identical. The overall length is a little shorter, and many/most parts won't interchange).
The 24/47s are rebuilt rifles, specifically pre-War Yugoslavian model 24 rifles refinished and restored to excellent condition. Some of these have like-new (or actually new) bores as the barrels were replaced during the restoration. Many believe these are the better guns since they have the pre-War craftsmanship and smoother actions.
The M48s are post-WWII new manufacture rifles. These were made all the way into the 1960s, I believe.
The 24/47s and M48 guns themselves are fairly similar.
One difference worth talking about is that unlike the M48s, which have turned down bolts, most of the 24-47s have straight bolts, making it impossible to mount a scope on the receiver without bending the bolt down or replacing it.
If you want a scope, you can still mount a long-eye relief pistol-type (or "Scout") scope where the rear sight sits, and this will also still let you load the gun with stripper clips (if you like):

There also may be slight differences in the stocks between the two.
In general, most of these rifles were dipped in cosmoline and put in storage anticipating the "next" big war, and in the meantime bolt-action military rifles became largely obsolete, As a result, the guns were dumped into the military surplus market and for a long time there were tons of these on the market in like-new or excellent condition.
At this point in time, most (but not all) of the surplus guns have dried up, so the days of $100 like-new Mausers are gone. But there are still plenty of both floating around in excellent condition on the used market. You can probably still find examples packed in cosmoline for around $200 or a bit more.
If you just want a "shooter" with iron sights (or the pistol/"scout" scope) the 24-47 is probably the way to go.
If you want a "shooter" for a conventional scope mount, you can try to find a bent-bolt 24-47 (they're scarce), or go for the M48. You'll have to have the receiver drilled and tapped to put the mount in place. That will hurt any future collectors value of the gun, though so far these don't have much.
Lastly, if you are really interested in a collectors/conversation piece, you should probably save your money and instead look for a nice German Mauser with all the Nazi proofmarks and such.0
