belgium flobert rifle

i have a pre civil war 42 cal breech loading rifle that says belgium on bottom of octogon bbl, were these made by various gunsmiths in that era?

Thanks for the alert, i knew i had an image problem, went back and took some more pics, appreciate the info

two questions, i dont think its pre civil war, and i question 42 cal, 8M would translate into a 22 or 32? s/n 36xx

    The Photo You Posted is quite Small.....but appears to be what We call a FLOBERT.....There were several manufacturers Cranking these Rifles and Pistols out in Belguim, and in the Liege area especially....

    I'll second what the Capt. told you. It's a Flobert with a "Warnant" action mechanism. Since it's marked with the "Country of Origin", as required by U.S. law. It dates no earlier then the 1890's. This would make it's age at the oldest, 30+ plus years after the American Civil War.

    They were chambered for various Black Powder Metric rimfire cartridges. Yours is most likely to be in .22 Cal. Don't use modern smokeless high pressure ammo in it though, if it is.

    Hello, i have a rifle with the "FL. 8M.1 L" ELG and more marking on it, i found that it is a rolling block .32 long riffle caliber, and it is from Belgium. i cant see the picture of yours with the link provided. i am posting mine to compare,

    Although your thumbpiece is broken off, it's definitely an 8mm Flobert. NOTE: Do NOT attempt to fire .32rf ammo in it. It was made to use 8mm Flobert bb or cb caps as its primary purpose was for indoor target shooting (also known as a "parlor gun").

    it is not for shooting 32 rimfire ,it is for the special 32 rimfire flobert cartridges

    TiBuck's example is not a Flobert, but a Belgian copy of the Remington Model 4 rolling block boy's rifle. It probably is chambered for the regular .32 rimfire rounds, which matters little since ammo is no longer made.

    I had a thumbpiece of a original Danish RB, rechambered in 45-70 break off like that also. The old RB's were made of wrought iron not steel. Wrought iron is just a step up from cast iron, as far as the metallurgy is concerned.
