Defender question

When I push the mag release button , the mag comes out freely and quickly.
If I pull the slide back on an empty mag, the slide stays back... but if I then push the mag release button , the mag just barely moves. Is this a problem with the factory mag or is the release at fault ?

If I do the same thing with some of my full size mags,some releases correctly and some don't ..

    Pull the slide back slightly when you press the mag release button. The mag is catching on the bolt.

    If I'm trying to shoot 4 bad guys, Isn't the mag supposed to eject so that I can reload quickly ? My Big 1911's spit the mag out properly .

    I would say it's a mag issue, not a gun issue. Take a look at the top of an empty mag, on standard mags you'll see a little dog leg on the left side of the mag follower. Spring pressure causes that to engage the slide release, spring pressure also boosts it out when the slide is to the rear & you press the mag release. Maybe on some mags it isn't fully engaged or more likely, not enough spring pressure.

    Easy way to check is remove the slide, insert the slide release & insert a mag. With no slide in place you'll clearly see what's happening.

    I have a Defender, the followers are different - sort of like the McCormick followers I think.

    I'll give it a look after work tonight or after I figure out how to field strip it lol. I don't even know what the re-assembly tool looks like [:I]

    Some mags are not "drop free" types and there may be some slight pressure against the mag when the slide is back, preventing it from falling out. Besides, if it's only 4 bad guys, you shouldn't need a second mag. [;)]

    If you ran into 4, after 6-7 shots it would be pretty unlikely that any of them would still be standing around.

    They'd either be on the ground bleeding, running away (most likely) or trying to attack you while you were reloading.

    A bit more seriously, so long as the mag dropped free enough for you to pull it out the rest of the way, you'd probably be OK in a pinch.

    In Europe, they deliberately design the mags in service guns NOT to drop free, so that the mags can't be ejected or lost by accident, and so that they won't break falling to the ground. Pulling out the empty mag only adds 1-2 seconds to your reloading with practice.

    If it were really stuck in an emergency, you could either push out the spent mag through the port, try pulling back on the slide while dropping the mag, or alternatively drop the slide into battery on the empty chamber, then eject the empty mag and rack the slide again after inserting the fresh mag.

    Anyway, you can probably fix this problem pretty easily with just a new/different magazine. In fact, you can probably just swap out the mag follower to fix this.

    Alternatively, you might be able to fix it with just a bit of filing or bending wherever it is binding.

    Comes apart pretty much the same as any 1911, minus turning out the bushing. If you got any reassemby tool (like Springfields little plastic clip) let me know, I got nuthin'. I just use a little piece of plastic between the guide rod & muzzle, works well enough to keep the spring off the link during reassmbly.
