How to ID "Changes"? on a S&W .38 pistol

I just put on layaway at a gun shop a S&W 1905 .38 special with a 6" barrel. Researching the pistol, I come across the terms of second change, third change, etc. I assume that this means certain changes to pistol over it's production run. Can someone tell me what changes or modifications to look for on this pistol, so I'll know which "Change" model it is? Thanks!

    I agree with Mike Whiskey..if all you want is the change number, give us the SerNo.

    However, if you want to know just exactly what "changed", then it is best for you to secure the book "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson 3rd edition". It will start with the first issue [of a particular revolver] and work its way through the changes, feature-by-feature. Best, Joe

    I hope this S&W has the case hardening for the cylinder, so it can shoot modern .38 special loads. (No +P loads, of course!)

    Well, you can cheat a little. During the year 1922, Smif started hardening their cylinders, and use the same procedure to this day. Also, in 1922, Smif dropped the "Made In USA" stamp on the right side, and started using the "Marcas Registradas" multi-line stamp.

    Not absolute, but there's very little overlap. Best, Joe
