early 1894 in 32-40 info wanted

i have a chance to buy a early 1894 rifle in 32-40,serial number 284xx, but there are no proof marks on the barrel or reciever, should there be proof marks on this early rifle? in above avg. con.,ex bore with very good wood and 50-60% blue. one small ding on magazine tube, he is asking 1100.00 for it. thanks eastbank.

  If the serial number of the Model 1894 rifle is 284xx, a five digit number, then no, it would not have proof marks from the factory. Winchester started applying proof marks to the top of the barrel and receiver on Model 1894's some where around serial number 300,000.

  I have seen the superposed "WP" proofmark as early as serial 287,000, but never on a 5-digit serial number (except those that were returned to the factory for rebarrel work).
