Problem with Ruger New Model Blackhawk

I have a Ruger New Model Blackhawk .357 that the transfer bar hangs on the back of the firing pin when attempting to cock pistol. Has any one experienced this problem... It will cock easily when pointed up when gravity is at work pulling the transfer bar down in order to clear the back of the firing pin. Thanks

  Sounds like the base pin may not be fully seated. There's a spring backed "pin" in the rear end of the base pin whose job is to push the transfer bar rearward so that it doesn't catch on the firing pin as you describe. In all likelihood your problem is either, a. that the base pin isn't full seated, b. that this spring backed pin within the base pin is somehow stuck, or c. that someone has replaced the base pin with one from an old model blackhawk that doesn't have this feature.

  There is usually a little chamfer on the top leading edge of the transfer bar that allows it to ride up over the firing pin when the hammer is cocked. If this is not there, or there is a burr, then that will inhibit this. I would personally send it back to ruger, or take it to a good gunsmith with the know how to take it apart and check/repair it.

  I was out a couple of years ago shooting my Ruger Super Blackhawk 44 mag with some pretty hot hunting loads.After the third or fourth shot the the gun would not cock.The base pin had jumped forward causing the transfer bar to hit the bottom of the firing pin and keeping the gun from cocking.Bad thing if you were facing a bad 2 or 4 legged animal about to do you harm.A locking Belt Mountian base pin fixed that problem.And yes a bad spring in the base pin will do the same thimg.Now whenever we go shooting I have a parts kit and tools to do any field repairs that may come up.Extra gun too.

  Thanks to all for replying and solving my problem ... The base pin is jumping forward due to some hotter that usual reloads. I really appreciate your help.
