russian m44
ok, the family is asking what i want for my birthday, i want a russian m44 in the wrapper,or is the polish m44 or hungarian m44 any better?they would be for the occasional trip to the range. any and all opinions on these rifles is appreciated. i can obtain one through the father in laws ffl, and has anyone dealt with J+G`s ltd. are they ok?

Don't make no sense unless it's the nobama panic. M 44's have been coming in by the container load from Eastern Europe for the last 8/10 years. Generally they have been selling in the $75-$150 range, over that time. A 1945 dated Russian, don't seem to be a rare variation? If you could hunt that guy down that made the $400 offer, IMHO you'll come out really ahead on that deal. 0 -

Obama has nothing to do with this. Nobody is talking about banning WWII era bolt action rifles. Any ban like that would effectively ban EVERY hunting rifle in the country.
I think a big part of this is that the surplus M44s in particular have finally dried up.
So the prices on these (particularly the like new ones) have actually gone up tremendously in just the last year, particularly the like-new ones.
But $400 still seems on the high side.0 -
Some pretty nice model 44's are going for about $149.00 in my neck of the woods. Thought about getting one for myself. I was given 2 of the M91's recently by 2 different people and their kinda long. I don't know if they are all marked with the hammer & sickle logo that may be the key as to why some one is willing to pay you $400.00 for it.I'd look into the markings a little more just to make sure. If some one is willing to pay you $400.00 and they have any knowledge of guns they are probably offering you less than their actual worth. 0 -
Here's what we're hearing from our wholesalers/importers: M44s are becoming scarce in inventory in those former East Bloc countries that held Soviet arsenals - and the Russians are banned (currently) from importing. So, in the past three weeks, we've purchased three M-44s from folks bringing them in and resold all three for in excess of 300 bucks to collectors, who fear the supply may be gone for good. The commonly found pieces from CAI, SOG, RGuns, RSR are not currently available. The MN 91/30s are also beginning to become harder to acquire. Barring the discovery of caches, issuance of import licenses for blocks/quantities by the BATFE/Customs - these formerly common rifles will become more difficult to find at reasonable prices. We recently purchased the LAST 100 91/30's in SOGs stock, again, barring further imports. Despite all of this - I'm thinking $400 is pretty steep.
p.s. - M38s are not currently available from any importer - as far as we can tell. If anyone knows of a source please post - so we can contact them. Thanks.0 -
paid 79 bucks at dunham sports for mine...sold it off at an auction for 120...fired it once didnt like dealing with an extended bayonet for accuracy...80 bucks was / is about the going rate..would recommend that you pick up the 91/30 for a shooter..if you can grab 4 bills for it...do it and dont stop laughing all the way to the bank[:D] 0 -
I got struck by lightning. I was at a show and happened to be looking at the stuff on the first table when a guy walked in with a laminated-stock M38. I assumed he wanted to sell it, and I asked if I could look at it. It was nice. Then I asked him how much he wanted, thinking that he would name at least the going price. But he said "$50". I tore my wallet in half getting it out.
Kind of makes me want to go to shows and just stand by the door.0
