Magnum primers

Can anyone tell me if magnum primers make a real difference? I've loaded many 357 mag rounds with regular small primers and AA5 and Bullseye and they go bang reliably.

  Getting ready to reload some .223 Remington ammo. Reloading with the popular BLC2 powder, my Speer reloading book recomends using CCI-450 magnum primers.
  
  My question is: I have several Federal #205 small rifle primers as well as Winchester # WSR primers, these are not designated as "magnum", what would be the difference between these and the CCI 450's?

  IMHO it depends on what kind of loads you use. If you normally load maximum, "Red Line" type loads? I would drop down by about 1/2 grain. If their standard middle range accuracy type loads, doubt that the mag primers would cause any dangerous pressure problems. They might affect the accuracy though, of that particular load.

  Speer #9 reloading book recomends using magnum primers if:
  
  1. any ammo being used will be at or below zero degrees F.
  
  2. with most ball powders.
  
  3. slow burning rifle powders
  
  And as stated before, just slightly reduce the charge and gradually work back to a level your rifle is comfortable with.
