    Well I guess it depends on the brand.

    They do a heck of a number on little furry animals for me.

    No. The bullet MAY deform somewhat hitting a hard surface. But not enuff energy to make even a butter soft lead bullet expand.

    How reliable they are is going to depend on the exact brand and what they hit, but yeah. . .these can definitely open up.

    As a somewhat related matter, most common .22 ammo will leave a pistol muzzle below the speed of sound, whether the ammo is nominally "subsonic" or not.

    Most nominal "target" rounds are also subsonic, though they aren't generally advertised as such. Even these sold target rounds will sometimes mushroom a bit too, again depending on the brand (some have softer lead), and what they hit.

    I use Remington subsonic HPs quite a bit on squirrels/rabbits because they shoot very accurately through my rifles. You have to make good hits because they generally wont open up much when they hit something like a squack/bunny noodle. Shot placement is critical when makeing head shots, too low and you get a wounded squirrel or rabbit, too high and you miss.

    The exit hole is usually somewhat dramatic, but nothing compared to a CCI mini mag HP or yellow jacket HP.

    I usually get alittle mist, but as far as expansion goes its probably moot.
