browning hi power trigger

not sure correct forum for this...just picked up an '82 belg hi power...the trigger sucks. could I do any "easy" mods? lighter trigger spring? the hammer is also very hard to pull back, gun has 200 rounds through it....just need to be broken in more? thanks for any help

    The HP's have a mag safety built into the trigger that has to be removed or worked on by a gunsmith that "KNOWS" how a HP works.
    The trigger mechanism has a lever that you can see in the slide when it is off that comlicates things.
    The easiest thing to do is remove the mag safety, and use a good lube on it.

    I have some new and old BHPs. They have strong as hell mainsprings on them, so unless you want to switch out to lighter that's just pretty much the way it will be.

    The BHP trigger can be worked on, the biggest gain is removing the mag safety. I suppose if you're the only one handling the thing and will replace it if you sell, that's fine. It's not something I would do because I think it opens one up to liability if there's an accidental discharge, but lots of folks do it.

    Absent that, you can either learn about doing it yourself or hand it off to a gunsmith. Without removing the mag safety, you can install a lighter trigger return spring, lighter mag safety spring and lighter mainspring. Polishing the sear and sear notch and the mag safety pad that presses against the front of the mag are basics and will give a much better pull.

    Keep in mind that any fiddling with the hammer or sear can compromise the thumb safety function, a little polishing should not have an impact though.

    Just remember that High Power was a service pistol.

    That being said, I shoot IDPA with my Browning High Power against Glocks, Kimbers, etc, and still do well enough with it stock to place either 2nd or 3rd.

    thanks 4 replies! just saw brownells had a 4 pc. trigger kit by c&s with reduced poundage..for 120, is this something to look into?

    Cylinder ans Slide shop in Nebraska does a good job on the Hi-power. Not bad on price.
