Proper care for American Elk.

What is the proper way to care and maintain a new set of American elk gun grips?

I am concerned about powder residues, oil, and other such lodging inside and damaging the bark that lies between the white veins. One such small piece of the cortex already came off. Is the bark supposed to eventually fall off?

Can one gently scrub the surfaces by using a tooth brush?

Is there some commercially made product designed to clean and protect elk and ivory?

  Paste wax, or neutral shoe polish, front and back. Yes, you can scrub them with a toothbrush.

  Would saddle soap, or other similar leather care products be adequate?

  Had a semi hand made deer hunting knife made with Elk Horn. Got back from a hunting trip, left it and other stuff out to be put away the next day and our Lab chewed the handle to bits. Had it for yesrs with no special care given. My advice, don't leave it lying about if you have a dog!

  No. Just use the wax. That's all it needs.
