weaver choke on model 12

Buddy of mine has an old Model 12, 20 gauge. Plain barrel. Ran serial number. Was built in 1942. Has a choke attachment on it. Not a Cutts or Poly. It is a Weaver Choke. Has the numbers 1 and 2 on it. Suppose one choke setting is tighter than another. Anybody got any information on the Weaver Choke? What about the numbers 1 and 2? How much would it detract from the overall value of the gun? Please advise.

    I picked up a winchester model 12, in 20 gauge. going to get it spruced up. It has a weaver choke set up. I unscrewed the 1/2 choke from the base. Threads in great shape. How do I remove the choke base? I want to reblue the gun. Don't think the aluminum choke and base can be on the gun while that happens. What can I do with the choke and base for recoloring?

    it is probaly silver soldered on the barrel

    Are you SURE it is aluminum If so then it would have to be either epoxyed or threaded . you can weld steel and you can weld aluminum but I have never seen aluminum welded to steel.

    Weaver chokes on model 12's are very rare. you may want to look into the value of this gun before you destroy collector value by blueing. Weaver chokes were installed on 12's in mid 50's and early 60's.

    I'll try to get a decent image of the gun. I ran the serial number on it; was manufactured in 1942. I am under the impression that by adding the Weaver choke, the collector value of the gun is considerably less than otherwise.

    You are correct; choke devices on a model 12 will detract from the value. If it was factory installed (no choke marking on the barrel), figure 20%-50% less value. If it was installed aftermarket, it is reduced to "shooter" value.

    That's what I thought. By the way, the barrel was choked as it is marked 'full' on the barrel. so reduced to shooter value as you say.

    I have a Model 12 3" Duck that was ruined by the addition of a Cutts setup. I cut it off, shortened the barrel to 26", and installed Hastings choke tubes. The gun is now a very nice waterfowl gun that had no collector value, anyway.
