It is like a burr under your saddle, except instead of being a seed with velco hooks it is a rough place or a little metal curl created in the machining process. 0 -

Its just a bit of stray metal that either was supposed to be polished or ground away, but wasn't. . .or alternatively, got created by mistake where two parts rub or hit one another.
One common example would be the little bit of raised metal that gets created around the edge of a freshly-drilled hole.
The problem is that extra metal in the wrong place can interfere with gun function or safety.
The "solution" to a burr, obviously, is just to file/ grind/ sand/ polish off the extra metal.0 -
If it's a .22 you are refering to, it's the dry-firing, whereby the firing pin strikes the edge of the chamber mouth. Best, Joe 0 -
As Joe said, in a 22, the FP hitting chamber mouth can cause a bit of metal to stick out into the chamber. can make extracting a fired case difficult. NEVER remove one of those by filing- there is another teachnique to PUSH metal back into place.
In general terms, what he dog and beantown said- a very small "splinter" of metal that causes unwanted roughness. Stainless steel used to be very bad for roughness when machined.0 -

Generally speaking no, unless you have a situation where two parts not quite machined properly are creating the burr as they interact, or if you continue dry firing a rim fire without a snap cap. 0 -

Depends on what exactly the burr is and what's causing it, but in general no.
One the parts are properly finished, they stay that way.0
