how to get your C&R

anybody out there have information on how to apply and get your c&r. i don't mind paying my dealer $25 when i have too, but would like to avoid since i plan on getting a bunch of older firearms that are c&r.
my old school freind lives out of state and his dad passed and he wants me to take over his fathers collection. i just don't want to pay my dealer $25 per gun as this could run me quite a bit since i am looking at 147 of them that are c&r and only 7 that are not c&r.

    I've had a C & R for about 12 years. I think it comes through pretty quickly, fewer than 6 weeks IIRC.

    Contact ATF, they'll send you the forms. Pretty easy, requires about 15 minutes to complete. I think the most often heard question is "who's my CLEO?" - meaning Chief Law Enforcement Officer - and someone who is to be given a copy of your application. It's just your local Chief of Police. He gets a copy, but since this is a federal form he has no approval or veto over you getting the C & R. You're just informing, not getting their OK.

    Keep in mind a C & R is a license to collect, not to be in the gun business.

    And send a copy to Brownells, Grafs & Midway - you get a pretty good discount by having the FFL. Brownells is about 20% off on average.

    147 guns? You lucky guy.

    if your covered by a county dept that will work as well..my local stopped all buy permits and registrations for a time (Political Crap) so i sent my copy to the county records div and all was fine and dandy

    FWIW, some local LE agencies are unsure what to do when they get their copy of your app. I put a cover letter with it, basically says "I am applying for my Federal Firearms Collectors License. Federal regulations require that your office be furnished with an information copy of the application, but require no action from your office."

    Saves the phone calls asking "What is it that you want us to approve?"

    It is painless & easy to get... Our local Chief had no idea why I stopped by the Police Dept & it took 4 other deputies to discuss why I was there & what they should do. Small town for ya! Was kinda funny. 147 guns? NICE! [:D]

    Why are you wanting a C&R to get guns from a friend?? Just go and get them. Say at $20 per for shipping, 100 guns would be 2 grand. Do a FTF and haul them back yourself.

    If his dad passed away, the C&R is voided I(if I read the regs correctly.) You can get the guns FTF without a C&R.

    As to applying for a license, others above have given good info. Mine took less than 2 months. I have renewed twice. Darn good return for my money excep I just went hog wild and bought too darn many of them. Tom

    I assumed (I know, I know ..) that he wanted the C & R because he's in another state, but you're correct - that isn't in the post and if he lives in the same state and the state does not require the guns go through a dealer, he can just pick them up after a FTF sale.

    But if he's in a state like California even with the C & R FFL some C & R guns, like handguns, must go through a Type 01 FFL Dealer.

    Edit - sorry, missed that you were indeed in another state. Geez, hate being wrong about being right. [V]

    Let's just assume another item: 20 bucks shipping and 20 bucks xfer fee and you are looking at 4 grand for 100 guns.

    Hell, for a lot less than that I will go pick them up for him! Tom

    i am in iowa he is in alaska so it would be a long drive.
    i did not know about the brownells and graf midway thing. i do alot of business with brownells so i will give them a copy as well.
    a big thanks to all
    he said that he will pack them in one big package on a pallet and then be delivered he quoted me a cost of about $400 i thought that was fair.

    Do be aware that if you get a C&R and then get 100 rifles in a single lot and put them in your bound book, there is no problem. If you ten start selling of the 50 you don't really want, you will look like you are using a C&R to deal in guns. You can sell, some few at a time to improve your collection, but that also implies buying better than you had with the money made.

    Frisky, those guns which ARE NOT C&R will have to be shipped to your FFL; they can't be included in the big shipment.

    You probably want to ask the friend to take photos of all guns, & you may want to determine the value so that he can insure them. You will be amazed at how easy it is for pallets of guns to disappear during shipment.
