browning lever action???'s

browning made a lever action model 1886 (?) in the early 90's. it was 45-70 and was supposed to be better fit and finish than the winchesters of that era.
I've seen them listed anywhere from $1000 to 1800!
are they THAT much better than a winchester?
if not, then why the high price?

    I got one but I think mine is late 80's. I love mine fit and finish is perfect. The main reason I got the Browning instead of the new Winchester was because it doesn't have the tang safety or the rebounding hammer.

    Limited supply, high demand = higher price.

    I have a take down model no amount of $ could buy. Fit and finish are near perfect. Some of us are willing to pay for "The Best There Is".

    cdnn has some of these now, the price reflects the cost of mgf. + some profit. Winchester couldn't (or wouldn't) keep the cost of mgf. low enought to turn a profit so they stoped making them. demand increased to the point of profitablity again. I've got one in .45/70 (paid just north of a grand) and yes it is a $1000 gun. you get exactly what you pay for.

    Those Browning 1886's were made by miroku in Japan. Then in the late 1990's Winchester, who was then Browning's sister division, had Miroku make some more with the Winchester brand name on under licensing agreement. They also made some 1892's, some 1895's, and some 1885's with the Winchester brand name on.

    If you have not had the chance to handle one or shoot one, then by all means, you should strive to do so. I have an 1999 vintage winchester 1886 Takedown, that is incredibly smooth, and accurate(I have no problem shooting a deer at 200 yards, and regularly practice at 300 and 400 on gallon milk jugs). I even went as far to put a 1000 yard ladder sight on it, and am working on a load htat it calibrates to.

    If you look on the auction side, you might be able to find a high grade takedown for under $2k, or an 1885 BPCR(I have one of those too). They are well worth the scratch, and will make the Marlin's or most of the Sharps replica's look mediocre.

    my winchester 30-30 is one of my favorite guns, so I was attracted to this browning from the get go.
    I didn't even know browning 1886's existed until a few days ago![:I]
    I'm thinking I need one!

    Just remember, that most of Winchester's lever action rifles were designed by John M. Browning. The 1892, is a scaled down version of the 1886, and the 1894, or 94 as it is called today, is a lengthened version, somewhat of the 1892. Then there are different models of each of those. The 1886 is the parent for the 71 Winchester in 348 Winchester. There is the 94 that parents the 64, ad a whole slew of models that the 1892 is parent to.

    Like has been mentioned, there is no amount of money that could buy my takedown, and am considering getting a deluxe model while I still can. I will gaurantee you it is the smoothest, strongest BIG bore lever action you will see.

    There are some nice takedowns over on the auction side right now, that can be had for under a grand...or that is where they are at now.
