I'm going to buy an AR platform - HELP !!

I'm going to buy one, even though I'm not a fan of them. I think it's an historically desirable firearm for a collection.

I've already decided NOT to buy one that is an assemblage of various company's parts.

I've pretty much decided to get a Colt, but have not completely eliminated other well-known brands if there is sufficient reason to consider them. Like: quality, durability, VALUE, etc..

May I please have suggestions as to which one ??

I know nothing of these firearms, except I don't like the ones that have a rattle in the stock.

Please help me.

    If you are looking at them with a historical frame of reference then I would recomend the current Armalite offerings. I think that they are still around. Armalite was who Stoner was working for when he invented the rifle and so to my way of thinking that makes them the most interesting in a historical way. Personally I bought Bushmaster because their barrels, at the time, were chome lined.

    Although I don't own one I have shot a Bushmaster that was pretty accurate--I do like the .450 Bushmaster[}:)]
    If not one of those I also like the Colt Delta HBAR. I'm like you Doug as I like the solid stocks more.

    Bushmaster is good. I have to tell you that I have been pretty impressed with the quality of Stag Arms as well. Do some searching on them, getting good reviews. Les Baer, from what I have read, is using Stag Arms uppers for all their left handed shooting stuff.

    Doug: Colt is authentic, as being the same company that produced the M-16. Cosmetically, there are many subtle differences from the Colt civilian models, and the Colt as carried by troops.

    If you would buy a Bushmaster, or somesuch that has the "little details" that colt placed on their M-16's (and are missing from their civilian models) you would have a rifle that more closely looked like the M-16 carried by troops. For example: Colt won't have an authentic pivot pin, or forward assist, and, I think the magazine release fence.

    Bottom line: Go with the brand, lose some of the "authenticity". Your call. Best, Joe

    Presumably by "historical interest" you mean "most interesting/desirable to own after the next coming gun ban". [;)]

    IMO, if you want the most "historically desirable" one possible, then go full hog and shell out the $20,000k for the full auto original Colt M16A1. Its a big investment, but probably a good one.

    Barring that, I think a pre-ban (that means pre-Clinton ban) Colt AR-15 with bayonet lug, flash-hider, and every other "evil" feature, is probably your "best bet" in a historical/collectibility/desirability sense. These guns aren't necessarily better than competing brands, but I think the word "Colt" still carries a lot of weight to collectors.

    Armalite would be the only other way to go for historical interest, IMO, though it isn't clear to me that these will appreciate more than the Colts.

    Bushmaster/Stag/Olympic, etc, might make good guns as shooters, and in some ways they might even more resemble the guns actually issued to US troops, but that doesn't necessarily mean they'll have added collector's value in 10-20-30 years.

    Are you going to shoot it or just keep it as a collectable?

    Collection = Colt or Armalite
    Shooting = Stag or Rock River Arms

    I'm going to get it as a "shooting-collectible". I don't expect to shoot it much - maybe a couple of hundred rounds a year, tops.

    Thanks to all your collective wisdom, I will get the Colt model closest to the M-16A2.
