SKS Magazines

I have a Norinco SKS that came with 1 USA Brand mag and I was wondering if anyone knew of any aftermarket mags that would fit my SKS. I have bought a few and none of them fit. I replaced the wood stock with a polymer folding one and the aftermarket mags still don't fit. I am thinking about trying a TAPCO mag but I am not sure, plus I'm tired of buying mags that don't fit. Any and all help and advice is greatly appreciated.

    Can an SKS with a fixed mag be adapted to take detachable magazines? And if so, how difficult a job is it? Where would a fella get the hardware.

    I believe what you may have purchased is a Norinco model D or M rifle and these use an AK47 mags. If the mags do not fit that would most likely be why. SKS's usually have an internal magazine of 10 rounds and these usually work the best. There are not really any after market magazines that work as well as the original. If you do have an SKS that uses the AK mags that's a whole different story.

    There are basically 2 different generations of aftermarket extended capacity magazines made for the SKS.

    The newer ones require the receiver to be separated from the stock, to mount. So that the magazine is not removeable and its only loadeable with the action open from the top.

    I have used both types of the aftermarket SKS magazines over the years. None were reliable. I went back to using the original military 10 rounder, that came with the SKS.

    I don't know about the legality of 922 part compliance here (ie replacing American parts with non-American ones), but I've heard again and again that the best SKS mag is the original factory 10 round mag. It shouldn't be too hard to locate one.

    The aftermarket higher-capacity mags are pretty much all hit-and-miss, though apparently it *is* possible for someone who knows what they are doing to fit some of them to original guns and get them to work reliably.

    If you have one of the SKS guns that takes AK mags, there's your answer. . .go try some AK mags.

    If you do, you're in luck, because not only are detachable high cap AK mags relatively easy to find, but those particular SKS variants have skyrocketed in value over the last few years to the point where they are worth nearly as much as actual AK's right now.

    My sks has a 30 round magazine that's a real pain to use.I switched it back to a 10 round mag so I could reload it with stripper clips.
    This is one of the most fun rifles to shoot.The banana magazine is
    cumbersome and it's on just for the intimidations look I guess if you
    took it to the range thar way.

    I agree there.

    I can see the use of an SKS than can take AK mags, as those mags are common, relatively inexpensive, and of course can also be used with common AK guns.

    But I can barely see the point of a 30 round fixed mag for a semi-auto SKS, when its so fast and easy to load 10 rounds at a time with stripper clips (which are also lighter, less bulky, and cheaper than high cap magazines).

    *If* you could get the fixed 30 rounder to work reliably with stripper clips, then I could see an advantage (as you could drop in 1-3 clips at a time, as the situation required), but in practice most of them won't.

    mr simonov designed a great rifle. people keep crumbing them up with after-market stocks and hi-cap mags. the original stock is perfect-why change? and the big mags rarely work. i am a sks fan , love'em and use'm as mr simonov designed them. you'll be a lot happier.

    IIRC the Chinese made a 20 rd fixed mag. Best of both worlds
