s&w 52
Hey guys, Is it raining out there, we are water logged here in N. Dallas. OK subject, found a S&W 52 #522xx in mint cond. for 800.00 no box 1 mag it is a 38 wadcutter only. by mint i mean 98++-99. is the gun worth this or not, what year was it made and it has no dash just stamped 52 & Serial #. I just got a S&W Mod 52. For those of you who don't know, it shoots 38 Special mid range wadcutters only. This gun shoots like a dream. My question is on the model. I have seen reference to the 52, 52-1, and 52-2. Mine has a 52 a space then a 1 is there supposed to be a " - " before the 1? Started in 1961 thru 1963 (52-1 started 1963). Single action target pistol. New mags still available, great target gun (I own one), but a little unforgiving on follow through due to the bullet length.
2008 gun list (not always accurate the last few months):
Exc. = $750
Experience with these is that they sell for between $650-$900 (a few people "ask" up to $1100, but they don't sell). Prices are strange right now. Good luck, if you buy it, make sure you use min length ammo.0 -
You have a very early production gun. S.N. range began at 50,000 for the 52, no dash guns. Probably 62/63?
I would say that was a excellent price if the pistol is truly factory original in that condition. The problem is that 52's were always expensive target guns, that were usually bought by hardcore bullseye shooters. They weren't much use for anything else, i.e. 5 shot magazine, special flush loaded .38 wadcutters only. Generally these guys did a lot of shooting on a weekly basis. Even if the 52 was well taken care of, would it be in that condition, after so many years? Make sure as best you can, that it truly factory original.0 -
I'd say it is well worth the money. These are nice pistols, very pleasant to shoot but as the snowman mentioned, very limited so far a what you can do with them (not much in the way of plinking). If the pistol has a spare magazine you are already money ahead because Model 52 magazines are tough to find and very pricey when you do track one down.

I bought this one a few years ago. A real pleasure to shoot and a super accurate piece. Its fun to hunt rabbits with. Flat wadcutters make quite a noise when they hit bunnies.
$800 is a good price for one in the condition you describe.
