savage 22 rifle model number

I have a savage octagon barrel 22 rifle.te barrel is about 24 inches long. the only markings onvthe barrel are "manufactured by savage arms",the next line says "utica, ny, usa. pat dec 25 1906". in front of the receiver is 22 S L LR. the magazine is in front of the trigger guard, and it has the markings "22 S L LR, savage arms company, pat april 28, 1908". does anyone know what model of savage this is? the safety is on the tang also. it is in like new condition. thanks

    My guess is a model 1906. The 1903s look about the same. There are guys on here that know much more than I about the savage line of vintage 22s. I'm sure they will come along to help out. In like new condition would be a prized find. They are great little rifles and great shooters.-Mike

    Would be of great help to know action and magazine type.
    I beleve most likely a .22 Pump action w/clip magazine. That would be a Model 1903. Take care of that magazine. These rifles are often found minus magazine. And replacements are hard to find.

    sorry, its a pump action, and the magazine has six holes for counting, i guess its a six shot, i haven't been able to check it yet. Are th_ese common guns? Is the book value close to actual value? The magazine is in like new shape also. this fellow had several nice guns in almost to new condition and all from this era.

    It sounds like a Savage model 1903. Savage never produced a pump 22 model 1906, although I hear people refer to them as model 1906 and Gun part corp has a listing for them. The 1906 comes from the patent date on the barrel. Savage also made a model 1909, which was the same rifle with a 20 inch round barrel. The 1903 had a 24 inch octagon barrel, walnut stock with a cresent metal butt plate. They did produce the same model with a shot gun style rubber butt plate, but this was very rare.This model was referred to as the English pattern.

    IMO the book values listed in the Gun Traders Guide are pretty close. These guns aren't exactly rare. But in my experience are fairly rarely found in good firing condition.
    Most I've seen are at least missing the magazine. And a lot of them pop up on the auction side in parts gun or project condition.
