In the field of .30 cal magnums, where does the .308 Norma fit in ?

    It is almost identical to the wildcat .30-338 Winchester or the .338 WM necked down to .30 cal.

    It is similar to the .300 Win. Mag. although the Win. Mag. has a slight edge in case capacity.

    The .308 Norma Mag. is an excellent cartridge with the exception of the expense. Unfortunately Norma and Lapua have chosen the high road of pricey offering as opposed to being in with the rest of the manufacturers. To their defense, the cases are of superior quality and tend to last longer than the American and European brass.

    For many years, the 300 Win Mag was my caliber of choice for virtually everything, hand loading to suit whatever need I had at the time. For the past 4 years, the .308 Norma Mag has taken over and become just about the only caliber I go to anymore, at least in belted magnum.

    If I recall, the 308 edges out the 300 by a couple of hundred FPS in MV and, although I shoot both cartridges from similar platforms, have virtually no difference in recoil. Although I have sufficient factory ammo to last awhile, brass can be formed from other calibers, I think 7mm Rem Mag is the easiest but I could be wrong.

    Yeah, the ammo is pricy but what isn't these days? I found 4 boxes at a LGS a few months ago marked $23.00 a box, bought 'em all. I have paid more than that for .300 Win Mag although it certainly is more available. I don't think .308 Norma is anymore difficult to find than some other calibers nor as pricy as some.

    But, given what it is, just how much ammo are you going to shoot up in any given year ?

    I had a 308 Norma for a while trading it for a lower recoil rifle. I made all my cases using the 300 H&H brass simply because I had both 7mm mag and 338 mag and do not like to alter cases for which I have the original caliber rifle. In addition, the 7mm/338 cases will work but end up a little short. I could make the 300 H&H brass perfectly including neck turning to the exact thickness, not something everyone would consider important.
    Most of the factory ammo is really hot to get it up to or above 300 win mag performance but the round can be extremely accurate in the right rifle. My rifle was way too light on the front end and the recoil was distracting to say the least. Probably no more than a 300 win mag in that weight rifle. Same bullet weight, same velocity, same weight rifle, equal recoil.
