Winchester 1892 carbine 44-40
Hi. I have a Win 1892 carbine cal. 44-40 serial number 12XXX (first year of production) in good conditions. I would know if it is possible the use of standard 44 40 cartdriges (Ex. Winchester 200 grains ball also used for Colt 1873)or only black powder cartdridges. Thank you.

I believe I read somewhere that they load the .44 WCF cartridges so that they would be safe in the older firearms since until SASS took off those were the only ones available to shoot.
But don't take my word for it. I am sure someone else here will have better information for you.

they currently loaded win. ammo will work fine in your old rifle assuming it is in reasonbly good cond. wether you should shoot a first year rifle is your desicion. 0 -
Yes, you can shoot standard 44-40 (44 W.C.F.) cartridges in your old Model 1892.
As a point of interest, your Model 1892 was not made in the first year of production. Instead, it was manufactured in the latter part of the second year of production (1893). If you would like to know the exact date, the Cody Firearms Musuem can provide you with a factory letter ($60). Refer to the internet link after my name in the signature line.0 -
Excuse me, but my model 1892 carbine serial number 12968, by the book "Winchester Lever Action Repeating firearms " - Volume 2 - Model of 1886 and 1892 - by Arthur Pirkle - North Cape Publications was really produced in 1892 (first year serial from 1 to 23701). crimson you, along with A LOT of other folks including me on here have gotten incorrect dated info with A LOT of the books out there. The reason being is the polishing room had the correct serial numbering to the year and many researchers were not using that info--see the two sticky's at the top of the experts forum and you will see what I'm talking about. 0 -

The book you have is not correct (accurate), nor are any of the other published books (Madis).
As ruger41 pointed out, you (and thousands of other Winchester collectors), have been misinformed by previous authors concerning Winchester dates of manufacture versus serial numbers.
For what it is worth, I spend much of my free time each year at the Cody Firearms Musuem in the Research Department (where they write the actual factory letters), and I have access to all of the original factory records. As such, I can positively tell you that your Model 1892 was not manufactured in the year 1892. If you have doubts about what I am saying, please contact the Cody Firearms Musuem and obtain a factory letter (it will tell you the exact date that it was received in the warehouse from the assembly room). Also, please feel free to tell them you spoke with me on the internet about your Winchester.0 -

No, I do not. Your Model 1894 was manufactured in the mid part of the year 1904.0 -

I'm a braziliam police officer. My grandfather was a braziliam police oficcer. He died in 2007. He has a Winchester 44-40, but i don't know the model of carbider. The serial number is 791306. Can you help me to discovery more information?
