Making a 22LR Smooth Bore

I'm thinking of trying to have a mossberg 702(low cost) bored out and the recoil spring lighted to make a semi-auto smooth bore. How much do you think a gunsmith would charge? Has anybody tryed this or would this even work? Just an ideal, quick follow up shot for those charging chipmunk!! Thanks

    not saying you cann't do it but I'll bet it will not work, the case on most birdshot shells is to long to function as a auto even with a lightenewd spring. reaming the barrel will not be cheap either (it takes a lot more than a drill bit).

    So I was confused on why you wanted a smooth bore. Is MW correct on why?

    If you are looking for a semi auto shotgun why not go with w .410 Saiga. I think they can still be had for under $300, maybe less. I gave $160 for mine last year and they are a blast.

    It would be cheeper, more reliable, and more power as the .22 shot shells are pretty weak overall.

    Assuming that the barrel length was over 18" (shotgun length vs 16" for rifles) I see no reason it would not be. Both are long arms, and I have seen nothing against it. If you were talking about pistols then it would still be legal but you would need to fill out an NFA Form 1 (making) for an AOW. A real basic statement is that any pistol size gun with a smooth bore is an AOW. There is a bit more to it but that covers the basics.

    NWCID; 410 are fun. 22 shotshells have 1/3 the report and a fraction of the load distent when shot. I have a Anschutz smooth bore and sometimes a fast 2ed shot would be nice. I had to much free time at work today and the ideal just came to me as something different.

    You wish to know the cost of making a Smooth Barreled .22 out of a Rifled Barreled .22????You ought to contact a Gunsmith and ask Him/Her how much they would charge You...
    As for Me......I'm just curious as to why you would want to do this...

    If you want a smooth bore 22, just buy a Stevens Favorite, I have one in 22,when I was a kid a local gun club used to shoot Skeeter Skeet indoors in thier club house. Shot at a heavey ruber curtin as a background, the birds where about the size of a silver dollar, and white.
