    hi i have a 1911a1 .45 ACP when i shoot the gun it fires and chambers rounds fine but after fireing a round it wont recock the hammer, the only way to fire anouther round is to pull the hammer back with my thumb, anyone know what could be causing this?

    Hello silas,

    Welcome to the forums here on Gunbroker.

    It sounds to me like you might have a broken spring for the disconnector, or someone who shouldn'r have, has tampered with the trigger/sear mating surfaces. You need to take this to a competant full service gunsmith as soon as possible.

    Hello You my friend are very lucky. If a 1911A1 fires around and the slide function allows for another round to be fed into the barrel BUT THE HAMMER IS NOT COCKED then yo have a very dangerous pistol.[:(!][V][xx(]. It could go fully auto at any time and be very hard to control if you had a full magazine when this happened . STOP using this pistol until problem is corrected. If you bought this used then most likely BUBBA has tried to get a light trigger pull and who knows what the filed, stoned, or modified to try to get his light trigger . unless you have worked on 1911A1's before take to your best Pistol smith and get him to Fix your pistol.

    the strange thing is i can put the mag in with the hammer down pull the slide back and chamber a round and the hammer stays cocked then when i fire it it will chamber anouther round just fine but the hammer is not cocked, i have had 4 1911's in the past that all worked fine i do know a lil something about them i have completely disassembled this 1 and every thing looks ok to me parts are not worn or broken, so idk what it could be i guess i'll try and find a gun smith and see what they can do for it. and yes i did buy this 1 used, thought i was getting a good deal at the time. thx for the reply.

    Could be lots of things - weak finger on your leaf spring, worn sear or hammer notch. Could be a very weak mainspring combined with one of these conditions, but if it's going "bang" all the time probably not.

    Good news is, most of what goes wrong with a 1911 trigger can be corrected with "almost" drop in parts and some knowledgeable gunsmithing.

    Since you've already done the field strip, maybe give the left & middle finger a little bend forward for some extra strength?

    If this were an AR or Garand, I'd guess the gun is short stroking. But I don't think a 1911 can feed the next round without returning the hammer to a fully cocked position. Slide stays back on the last round?

    yes the slide locks back when the last round is fired.

    Who manufactured your pistol, if no good gunsmiths around I would recommend you send it to the manufacturer to fix.

    as already mentioned, alot of possibilities!
    in no particular order:
    hammer strut, sear spring, cocking notch, sear, disconnector...
    if i was a betting man, id bet on the cocking notch and or sear has been filed by someone with a how to book on doing trigger jobs. (it's not as easy as it looks!) replace the hammer and sear and i bet the problem goes away.
    If youre in NW kansas and it's a Colt, I'll be happy to look at it before you buy any parts.

    G.I. 1911A1 trigger/sear/disconnector/grip safety, three leaf combination springs are soft and over time lose their curvature. They need to be reformed periodically and should be the first part examined in a situation as yours.
    Bend the grip safety blade about 1/4" rearward and the other two blades forward about 1/4". Make the bends gentle and uniform by hand.
    Start the bends above the cuts.
    Assemble the pistol and keeping the trigger depressed, rack the slide, letting it slam forward a half dozen times (on an empty gun).
    If the hammer falls, examine the sear and the hammer notches for burring or chipping.
    If the hammer stays back, test fire the pistol. You should be good to go.

    had to buy a new sear and leaf spring, and now it's as good as new thx to everyone for ur post, hope to be able to help you with ur next prob.
