Winchester Model 1897 Police 20" w/ metal butt
New to Gun Broker forum and seeking expertise regarding my inherited model 1897 w/ Serial C (above) and 2280XX. I've keep it up in cleaning with test firing and surprised it did quite well. The bluing is about 99% retained on the barrel with a few nicks throughout. As far as I can go back on its history is it belonged to my grandfather for his role as a reserve sheriff (or rather volunteer in those days) back before I was around. I can get picks to confirm it's condition, but wanted to know since the serial number was so early and it's in such clean condition (relatively speaking) what history I can expect on this shotgun. Thanks in advance for your input.

The partial serial number tells me that it was manufactured in the latter half of the year 1903. If you want to know exactly when (the date) it was actully received in the warehouse from the assembly room, you can purchase a Cody factory letter. The factory letter will also tell you what the exact original configuration of the gun was when originally manufactured. With all of that said, it is ultra rare to find a 100+ year old Winchester in 99% condition. If possible, please post pictures of your gun.0
