scope ran out of clicks?????rem 700 tac
hello everyone, ive got a problem.... Ive got a burris 6.5x20x50 sitting on a rem 700 tac 308. Burris rings and burris xtr base. just starting shooting the gun and lined it up at 100 yards to zero. Now here is where the problem begins. At 300yards. Im having to use the 600 yard mil dot. and still a foot low. Basically i only have 8 clicks up at 300 yards. plenty down just not enough up. So do i need higher rings, different base or what? any help is appreciated

with the .308win at 100m the trajectory is usually about 3" above center bore At three houndred yards it about 9" below center bore.
the impact should be about 6" low at 300 yards, if your scope is zeroed at 100 yards. that should be about 8 clicks up (if your scope has quarter moa adjustments) to get you on target.
sounds like your scope is adjusted to the very top of its adjustment range.
Or if your scope has true mils. just hold to where the top of the first mil under the crosswire is resting at the bottom of your your targets bull.0 -
This is a new one to me,but here's what I've learned so far.... ultimately you want a scope as low to barrel as possible without interfering with bolt action ect. Do NOT over tighten rings, you can bend or warp the scope tube. Many scope have a re- zero capability where you can loosen the screw on the knob ,set to zero and gain more clicks. Before attempting this read the scope instructions. Lastly it could be the round your shooting, as in a really heavy round that just plain drops like a rock. Hope this helps. Your socpe is not centered, meaning the elevation adjustment screw is not in the middle with the same number of turns from one end to the other. You can put a mirror close in front of your scope, letting in some light but close. You will see two reticles when you look in the scope, one in sharp focus, one softer focus. Work the adjustment screws until the two reticles are on top of each other (you see only one) Than you can bore sight, sight in at 25 yards, then 100. 0 -
Also it may be the positioning of your rings, unless they are lapped (really?) and/or adjustable (some Burris rings are).
With my Savage 22wmr boltgun, I had to swap what I had as the front to the back and rotate one of 'em (didn't matter which) around to "face" the other way. Without doing that, I was off major to the right...0 -
Hello Sounds like the problem is in the mounts . You dont have the front and back mount reversed do you ? also Burris sells some off set shims that fit INSIDE of some models of their rings to give you a different angle between line of sight of the scope and bore line I like these as they don't expose your scope to misalignment of the rings. 0 -
1.I assume your XTR base is 1 peice?
The Burris signature series uses larger interior lenses than other 1" brands to gain better resolution and light transmission. This relates to less travel ability than other 1" scopes due to the necessary larger erector tube. You simply have less travel in a Burris signature, but to me, the tradeoff is worth it.
If you are out of elevation at 300yds, you have an issue somewhere.
My first thought, assuming a 1 peice base, would be a ring issue. But unless they mic way out of true, that isn't it.
I would think you need a 20moa base (so that the scope is dialed DOWN in elevation to make up for the 20moa incline in the base). This would leave you a lot of UP elevation.
lapping your rings would not make up this large difference, so save that for after you try a 20moa base..0 -

No, you are not gaining more clicks. The purpose of resetting the zero on the scope, is to go back to zero on the dial, after you have sighted in at some particular yardage, (100 200 300). Then you can shoot at the next distance, and record the dial setting, and so on, recording the setting. Then in the future, with the same load, and a good scope, you can return to the same dial setting, and your good to go for that distance. Running out of adjustment is a function of how much travel (mechanically) is available in that particular scope. I would not think that standard bases, would cause you to run out of vert. adj. by 300 yards. They do make bases that are angled (vertically), such that the front of the scope is tipped downward, to aleviate this problem for long range shooting. I put a set of Burris signature rings on mine with the -20+20 (inserts) in one ring and the -10+10 in the other ring and got anothe r30minutes of elevation. Saved changing to the tapered.canted mount. Also the signature rings stop the scope tube from being pinched in any way. I've also got a set on a 338 win mag and have had no problem with rifle changing POA or scope slipping etc. I just followed the instructions ( I know I wasn't supposed to read them but I didn't let my wife see me do it!) 0 -
