Marlin 336 vs Winchester 94
I am in the market for a 30-30 lever gun. The guy down the street has a really nice (95%)post 64 Winnie and a new Marlin 336 on the wall. Which in your opinion makes the better hunting gun, and why?

I had a marlin 336 that was really nice and shot great. The thing that really turned me on to Marlin over the 94 was that was easy to mount a scope on the marlin. I love win 94's too. They're just a fun gun to take out and shoot in the brush and if you like shooting open sights. Either one is a great gun, but if you wanted to hunt with it I would go with the Marlin. 0 -
I have a Marlin 336 which I have used for over 20 years for deer hunting in Florida. I do like the firearm and have never had a problem with it. I agree with the previous post regarding the mounting of a scope. I think the Marlin is easier to mount a scope than the Winchester. I also think that the ease of the lever on a Marlin is better than that of a Winchester. Also, I like a side eject instead of a top eject.
By the way, I have owned a Model 94 too. Long story short, both are excellent. Only you can decide what meets your personal likes/dislikes.0 -
The biggest advantage for Marlin is being easy to remove the bolt, so it can be cleaned from the breech instead of the muzzle. I also think the elevator in the Marlin works smoother than the 94.

If it is a pre-64 model 94 and you can shoot with iron sights, go for the 94. If it is a post 63 94, go for the 336. I have all three. I like the action on the 336, I like the slimmer wood on the 94s, I wish I could afford to re-stock the 336 with trim walnut. I like the side eject on the 336 and the ease of socpe mounting. On the post 63 trapper model, I have a Burris Fast Fire II red dot sight, which is a great compromise between iron sights and scope for old eyes.
Really, buy the one that sings to you, you will likely not be too unhappy either way.0 -

If you're comparing a pre '64 model 94 to a newer Marlin, - choose the Marlin.
Don't take the 94 hunting, just fondle it and shoot it a few times to keep yourself happy.
As others have said, for a hunting rifle you should take the Marlin.
They're bigger, stronger and last much longer [:)]
Mine is in .45-70 and it held together when I accidently fired a round for the Siamese - 405 gr. @ 2160 fps. I thought it would be disintegrated but didn't bother it a bit.0 -

As you clearly stated you were compairing a POST 63 94 to a Marlin 336. In my opinion it's a no brainer, the 336 is hands down the clear winner! I've had(as in I don't have any more)several 94 winchester'S Both pre and post 64's. I now own, and hunt with eight marlin 336's. Pros for the Marlin are, scope mounting, ease of takedown for cleaning, and accuracy. Pros for the winchester, Pre 64 collectability. post 64= jonque, thats high priced junk, and a company that let the "bean counters" run them out of the gun trade.[:)] 0 -

Thanks for all the comments. I was leaning Marlin anyways, but just wanted to hear from others.
I looked at some Henrys once. I really do not like the way they load.
I will probably go with the Marlin if the guy will allow me to trade my CZ40B in on it.0 -
Marlin. Better made, much better design, way easier to clean properly. 0
